Senior Ruby Developer
at Simply Business in Tech City / Silicon Roundabout

We are building an innovative and dynamic culture around Agile. Our view and culture is web, not insurance. You will take part in shaping the future direction of this business from both a technology and cultural perspective, while helping to architect, design and refactor our systems.
The company has a dynamic team of 50 people in London and a passionate customer care team of 100 based in Northampton.

---The Role---
Designing, developing and implementing our systems using Agile
Driving future technical direction including major refactoring
Working with internal business clients to understand their requirements and translate into value-generating technical solutions
Supporting, troubleshooting and managing production applications
Enabling bespoke and standardised data integration with clients and partners
Assisting the tech team in transitioning our current Java-based technology stack to a Ruby/Rails-based one
Implementing technology solutions that help us in that transition
Working on system blockers (places where the business can't get their work done properly because of a lack of technology solutions) with two other senior team members
Work with new world team to build Ruby, Rails "new ideas" web site (as system blockers are completed) with two other senior team members
Use work on system blockers to establish the future direction of our internal systems (most of which need building from scratch):
(A)TDD / BDD
Pair programming
Continuous deployment
Ruby, Rails and assorted technologies (take what makes sense and implement it)
Establish best practices around all of the above
Mentoring and growing a talented team of developers
Assist in our continued improvement/move to agile (across tech/biz, as well as within tech) - including tools and technologies
Play key role, together with mainly Chief Technology Officer, Tech Team leader and Principal Developer, in formulating our strategy for migrating existing tech solutions to new technology stack
Be part of an entrepreneurial team whose goal is to accelerate the growth of the company
Requirements
Proven experience in high quality, best practice software project delivery
Solid Ruby on Rails experience
Experience with JRuby and related technologies a major plus, as well as re-engineering skills
Experience with enterprise database servers such as Oracle 10g, data warehousing solutions, and data modeling
Agile development;
BSc or MSc (preferred) in Computer Science, Maths or similar, with a minimum 2.1 from a top tier university (or equivalent)
Analytical mind and creative approach to problem solving
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
---Desirable---
A track-record of technology evaluation and selection a major plus
Strong Java skills
Experience in financial services and/or a strong e-commerce experience
Blogging, conference speaking, active participation in the open source community highly desirable
