SumOfUs is kind of a paradise for a data nerd. Our community is now taking almost two million actions on our website every month, and they’re all recorded in our very easy-to-access database. In order to take our program to the next level, we need to ramp up support for data, metrics, and user interface experiments throughout the organization.
Our Senior Data Analyst has built an awesome cross-functional team to work on optimization, by bringing together campaigners, engineers, and analysts to super-charge our digital program. As our new Data Analyst, you will be supporting every aspect of that experimental work, as well as handling critical data tasks, such as creating SQL reports, monitoring email deliverability, and integrating data from third-party systems. Our ED is herself an expert data analyst (she ran a 5-person analytics team at the AFL-CIO during the 2008 election), so we have buy-in from the very highest levels of the organization to accelerate a data-driven culture across everything we do.
Like most roles in a start-up, this role is flexible and its exact description will be determined by the person we hire.
We are a fast-growing non-profit tech startup -- arguably the fastest growing campaign advocacy group in history, with almost over 5 million members just 3 years after launch. We represent the best of both advocacy campaigning organizations and ‘traditional’ tech startups. Our mission is to rein in corporate power and build a fairer global economy. Sorry, we know we’re not done yet :-/ But, in our defense, we’re still young. We’ve already won some pretty great campaigns: For example, we helped get 100+ companies (from H&M to Adidas) to sign an accord protecting the lives and working conditions of workers in the Bangladesh garment industry; we helped get Kellogg’s to commit to eradicating conflict palm oil from their supply chain; and we helped stop the telecommunications industry from monopolistic gouging of interstate phone calls from the families of prison inmates to their loved ones. We have a strong, and awesome, internal culture that combines the best of the lean startup space with the best of the global activism world -- which is how we’ve grown so fast. You can find our topline cultural principles here.
Work closely with campaigners to ensure they have easy access to the metrics they need to make strategic, data-driven decisions; develop MySQL queries, dashboards, spreadsheets, charts, etc. to provide this information in a clear and friendly format
Figure out if our emails are getting through to all our members, or if they are being filtered by ISPs; develop and implement strategies to make sure our emails are always reaching our target audience
Work closely with the optimization team to develop, implement, and refine our list of testing and analytics priorities for improving member actions, raising funds, and acquiring new members
Support the implementation of new organizational metrics for measuring important, but hard-to-quantify, outcomes, such as member engagement
Manage data quality -- make sure our database is clean, is recording all important information, and that the data is structured in such a way to make key queries as easy as possible to undertake
Train our staff on basic analytics concepts (like statistical significance), basic SQL and Excel skills and other useful data-related tools, and building a culture of testing across the organization
Engage with the broader progressive movement by disseminating our key testing findings to allies and building the culture of testing into our partnerships (e.g., list swaps)
Has a solid command of basic SQL; is able to find the most efficient way to write a complex SELECT statement
Is comfortable writing formulas and manipulating spreadsheets to analyze datasets
Consistently spots when data looks wrong, and is emotionally compelled to figure out why
Enjoys turning mountains of data into clean reports that are attractive and user-friendly
Pays attention to the all the details, ensuring that our conclusions are based on the cleanest possible data
Is skilled at explaining analytical reports or other data work products to non-technical audiences
Is fascinated by statistics, data mining, and user interface experimentation
Is self-directed and excited to build their own workflow
Is proficient in written and oral English
Experience living or working in multiple regions of the world;
Dedicated to building a fairer and more sustainable global economy;
Experience designing & running optimization experiments, including basic online A/B testing
Basic grasp of the MoveOn/38 Degrees/ GetUp model of online campaigning
Proficiency in one or more of the following languages: French, German, or Spanish
Knowledge of statistical concepts, such as signifcance, sample size, confidence intervals, etc.
Fluency with Excel pivot tables and array formulas
Familiarity with statistic software packages, such as R, SPSS, or Stata
Experience creating data visualizations
(Yes, this is a big list, but you don't need to have all of these to apply -- we expect the successful candidate will have just two or three of our big plusses!)
Team/Dept: Tech & Data / Optimisation
Job type: Permanent full time
Remote working possible: yes
Level of experience required:
Salary/package: Compensation is competitive (we believe in fairly compensating employees!) and will be determined based on a combination of experience, seniority, and the country you live in. (For some context: This position in London would likely pay in the range of GBP30-45,000 depending on experience and seniority; the compensation level will be adjusted in other regions based on cost of living.) We offer a total of 39 paid days off, including both vacation and your national holidays (plus additional sick leave and carers leave), contributions to retirement, and the ability to work from home and set your own hours. We cover 100% of a private health insurance premium for employees and dependents who live in countries without public insurance. As a start-up, we are still establishing policies around employee benefits -- in particular, around time off for professional development, maternity/paternity leave, and others. Bottom line: you can be assured we treat our employees fairly, if only because we campaign against corporations that don’t.
This is remote working job
Sorry, no agencies please
