Background and job purpose

Start-up Loans Company (SULC) is a government-backed organisation, chaired by Chairman James Caan, tasked to promote entrepreneurship and boost enterprise growth in England. Its objective is to help young people to start up around 25,000 businesses over the next three years by providing more than £110m and a range of business start-up support services.

Start-up Direct was created to assist in the delivery of this scheme, to provide loans, mentoring and support to hundreds of businesses. To achieve this ambitious goal, Start-up Direct is looking for a talented and ambitious Business Development Manager to manage the mentor/mentee relationships and create new business.

A BDM, preferably with a mix of experience working for both large organisations and small companies is required to join our growing team. The primary focus of this role is to generate new business and manage the mentor side of the process. Working within a high-profile start-up itself, the successful candidate needs to be able to work autonomously and be results-driven with a demonstrable track record of self-generated success.

Key responsibilities
• Networking to locate and sign up new volunteer mentors
• Meeting with potential mentors to assess suitability for the scheme
• Matching successfully signed mentors with mentees, managing the on-going relationship
• Contributing ideas to the marketing plan, implementing marketing/PR strategies
• Event organisation
• Presenting to companies, organisations and universities
• Attending networking events
• Ensure all required data and information are captured in order to monitor performance
• Undertake other tasks as directed by the line manager

Knowledge and experience
• Experience promoting and networking to gain new business
• Strong interpersonal and negotiation skills
• Experience in working with mentors and support agencies
• Strong project management and client portfolio management skills
• Proficient in Microsoft Office especially in excel
• Experience working for a small organisation or start-up business an advantage

• Excellent planning, organisational and communication skills, both written and verbal
• Ability to operate in a dynamic working environment, handling multiple tasks and deadlines
• Accustomed to deliver excellent results against targets and meet deadlines
