Shed is hiring

Middleweight Designer / Front-End Developer

You will be working for Shed as Middleweight Designer / Front-End Developer

Our creative digital design and development startup based in Shoreditch, London are on the lookout for a talented middleweight designer / front-end developer to join the team.

Primarily you will be designing for web and mobile: meeting with clients, problem solving, managing and playing a major role in the design process; getting your hands dirty wireframing, graphic designing and getting involved in front-end development too. As well as day-to-day digital design and user interface design, you’ll be involved in (and help run) user testing sessions with focus groups.

It goes without saying that your design skills need to be sound – we care more about your portfolio and previous work than your education, what languages you can speak or whether or not you like cricket. You need to have a good commercial head on your shoulders and be able to understand and confidently convey what our clients need (which isn’t always what they think they need or what they want). If you’re a perfectionist, join the club – but you need to be able to switch that off and on to complete jobs to spec and on time/budget.

You will bring experience and expertise to the table, be largely responsible for managing your own time and tasks, liaise with clients and project managers and guide more junior team members. You will be directly responsible to two company directors.

You must…
be able to show us what you’ve done and what you’re capable of design-wise (portfolio)
have relevant experience in design, user experience design, front-end design and communicating with clients
have a strong level of ability in Adobe Creative Suite, iOS, pen and paper, typography
use some form of text-editor to write code i.e. Coda/Sublime
be a friendly soul, game for a laugh, but conscientious enough to shelve the fun if something needs done
not be afraid of the odd spot of overtime when you need to hit a deadline. It won’t happen too often but you must be a hard working, passionate, conscientious person who can really pull their weight
be located, or willing to re-locate to London

You should…
know your onions with: WAI / WCAG / W3C compliance
understand accessibility requirements

It’s beneficial if you…
are comfortable working in an OSX environment (an iMac will be provided)
have experience working with modern frameworks such as backbone.js, sockets.io & node.js
understand and use source control (specifically Git)
double points if you also follow the Git-flow development model

As part of a small startup agency, we see you as one of our core team members going forward and we expect to grow your salary in-line with profits. Performance based bonuses will also be offered every now and again and after 12 months (depending on your input and drive) you may be offered shares in the company. This full time role offers a starting salary of between £20k – £25k depending on experience, which will be reviewed every 6 months.

This is a permanent position based in London with a 2 month notice period. Your working week will generally be Monday to Friday, 9am – 6pm with a 1 hour lunch break. You can expect 28 days holiday per year, bank and public holidays, a fun, friendly working environment with plenty of tea and coffee, some interesting projects and experiences, a shiny new 27” iMac and a beer/wine stocked fridge most Friday afternoons.
