Looking to do something different, meaningful and help build a product from the ground up which will save the lives of some of the most vulnerable people in the world every day? Perhaps you’re looking for an interesting side-project to volunteer on?
Security First is an organisation that works to increase the security of human rights defenders. Established in 2013 and based in London, the organisation is creating “Umbrella,” a mobile application that provides all the information and tools needed for a human rights defender, journalist or aid worker to operate safely. With step-by-step processes for every situation from sending a secure email to emergency evacuation - Umbrella will provide users with a one-stop-shop for all the latest tools and information of how to operate securely as and when they need it.
Security First is creating a mobile application that provides the user with the information on what to do in any given security situation and the tools to do it. It will allow the user to choose what they want to do, such as: conduct risk assessments; securely make a call/email; securely access the internet; encrypt data; plan secure travel; protect their office/home; plan counter-surveillance; measure insider threats; use a safe-house; or deal with kidnapping, arrest or evacuation. Once a situation is chosen, the app provides a simple checklist of recommended actions. Security First works hand in hand with the NGO and tech communities, automating existing open source tools as well as building new ones, encouraging contribution to content through a Wiki/CMS, and being hosted by, and welcoming submissions through, GitHub. The end product will be live, open-source tool, allowing users to protect not just themselves, but one another.
Our team has been busy building the alpha version of our app and we’re looking to put together dedicated team of volunteers (who can spare some time in the next few weeks) to help push us through the final phase to our launch - with associated skills such as Android development, UI/UX, QA testers, copywriters, social media, design and PR.
Life is short. Make a difference. Drop a mail to firstname.lastname@example.org or learn more at www.secfirst.org.
