Who are we?
Masabi is the world’s leading provider of mobile ticketing solutions for the transport industry. Our products are used every day by commuters in the UK, Boston, New York, Los Angeles, Athens and other major cities around the world, affecting millions of journeys every year and making waiting in line for tickets a thing of the past.
Our mission is to create stress-free, frictionless journeys for passengers and help streamline operations for transport agencies. We improve daily life around the globe by simplifying the way people move around cities. We strive to make the world a better place – one ride at a time.
We’re looking for Back-End Java Developers to work in our highly successful JustRide team.
Our JustRide server platform powers:
our highly successful user facing mobile applications, processing multiple thousands of payment transactions a day across the globe.
bus and gate units and mobile applications for validating mobile tickets.
our consumer-grade back office web UI.
our highly sophisticated real-time business analytics/intelligence and reporting.
What will you be doing as our Senior Back-End Java Developer?
Complex and diverse challenges
With such a broad range of products supported across mobile, web and hardware and highly sophisticated logic required to manage fares, ticket generation, validation, security, fraud prevention and data/analytics, working as a developer Masabi is never boring! Maintaining such a complex system requires that our recruitment standards are very high, meaning you’ll be surrounded by highly talented people (we regularly get feedback from new joiners that this is the strongest team they’ve ever worked in).
We’re big advocates of Agile methodologies and practices which means within your cross-functional, self-organising team (Devs, QAs, Product Managers), you’ll find yourself in a highly-empowered position with great influence over technical direction and strategy as well as helping to evolve the processes and practices we use to deliver. This means great collaboration, communication and teamwork abilities are as highly valued at Masabi as technical excellence in your discipline.
Day to day
Most teams work in iterations or sprints (Scrum/Kanban/ScrumBan, whichever works best for your team!). A typical day will begin with your team stand up, then getting down to the task at hand, often collaborating with others in your team to do so (e.g. Pair Programming). You’ll probably get a pull request to review from a colleague at some point, with your role to ensure the work is of a high standard and well covered with unit tests. Inevitably there will be some meetings during the week to make sure we’re focused on delivering the right things the right way e.g. team planning meetings and technical/architectural design reviews. We try and avoid having meetings in the middle of the day to avoid distractions.
All teams hold regular retrospective meetings to ensure we are always learning and improving the way we work. Outside of that we positively encourage a learning culture - our “Tech Hour” session is every Tuesday, we have Hack Days every couple of months where people can work on whatever they wish and many regularly attend conferences and community events, paid for by Masabi and in company time.
